Here are 4 common summer mishaps and how to steer clear of them:

1. Open windows, unlocked gardens and opportunistic thieves

Warm weather often means flinging open the windows, but it can also make your home more vulnerable to break-ins.

How to stay secure:

• Only leave windows open in rooms you’re using, especially if they’re accessible from outside

• Always close windows when you leave the house, even if it’s just for a short while. Thieves can often wiggle their way into small spaces so it’s better to be safe than sorry

• Don’t forget about your garden - bikes, scooters and toys left out can be tempting targets. Bring them inside when you’re not around.

• Heads up, If thieves should enter your home by force or violent means, you're covered.

2.  Lost or stolen belongings on holidays and day trips

It’s easy to get distracted when you’re out enjoying yourself, and that’s when belongings can go missing.

Keep your valuables safe:

• Keep items like phones, wallets and cameras zipped up and close to you

• Don’t leave bags unattended, even briefly

• Be extra cautious in busy areas like beaches, train stations and tourist hotspots

• Check your policy details before travelling to make sure you have the right cover

3.  Lawn mowers and flying stones

It might sound unlikely, but stones hidden in the grass can become dangerous projectiles when hit by a lawn mower.

Avoid unexpected damage:

• Check your lawn for stones, sticks or other debris before mowing

• If you’re near windows or people, point the mower away from them just in case

4. BBQs and firepits gone wrong

BBQs and firepits are summer staples, but they need to be handled with care.

Stay fire-safe:

• Set up well away from buildings, fences, plants or tents

• Never leave a fire unattended, especially with children or pets nearby

• Ashes can stay hot for days so make sure they’re completely cool before getting rid of them

With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy everything summer has to offer - without any unwanted surprises. But, if the worst does happen, know that we’re on hand to help, and that it’s never been easier to make a claim on your home insurance.
