Fuel prices drop to a four-year low
Fuel prices are now at their lowest since 2021, according to RAC Fuel Watch.

Fuel prices drop by 2p
Petrol prices dropped by 2p in May, which marks the third month in a row price have fallen. Drivers are now paying the lowest price they’ve paid for petrol since July 2021.
Diesel prices also dropped by 2p in May, making this the first time diesel has cost below 139p per litre since September 2021.
Supermarket unleaded is now 129p per litre, with diesel sitting at 135p per litre, both of which are 3p lower than the UK average. However, in Northern Ireland, fuel prices are even cheaper. Petrol is an average of 126.5p per litre and diesel is 130.8p per litre, that’s 6p and 8p cheaper than the average UK price.
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “While this takes us back to prices last seen almost four years ago, it’s worth remembering that prices are lower today because the 5p duty cut, first introduced in March 2022, is still being applied. If it wasn’t for the fuel duty freeze, prices could well be much higher.”
Where can you find the cheapest fuel?
Although fuel prices are getting cheaper, there is still some difference between petrol stations.
While you’re driving, you can check all the petrol stations you pass and make a mental note of which one is cheapest. You can also use fuel finding apps to find the cheapest fuel at any given time of day.
Simon Williams said: “Our advice to drivers is to download the free myRAC app and start using it to find the lowest priced fuel near them. The app lets you save your favourite filling stations and compares prices to the RAC Fuel Watch average.”
